Los Angeles Indoor GSSF Competition This Weekend

at the LAX Range in Inglewood

“The GSSF League Match is a series of three matches conducted over a 3-month period. Our class dates are displayed above. Participants must be current GSSF members and compete in two of the three matches to qualify for plaques and prizes. If you are not currently a member, you may join on-line at the web-site or upon registration at a www.gssfonline.comGSSF League Match. An annual GSSF membership costs only $25.00 and allows you to compete in any GSSF match.”

It is always fun to do, even if you can only do 1 of the 3 events (you need to shoot at least 2 to qualify).  Last round will be on May 9th.

Long Beach Ammunition Sales Registration

UPDATE: The City Council has decided not to draft an ammunition sales registration ordinance.

For a little over 2 years the City Council of Long Beach has been discussing drafting a City Ordinance that would require ammunition retailers to keep records on the identity of every person that purchases ammunition and what they purchased.  This data is then to be used by the Long Beach Police to identify persons who are prohibited from purchasing or possessing ammunition.

Well they appear to be set for a final vote this Tuesday, March 24th.

Read about it on Breaking News from CalGunLaws.com

Several other cities have implemented similar ordinances only to repeal them later.  Los Angeles still has their law in place, but it has proven to be useless at reducing the crime rate.

Rand Study On Ammo Sales Confirms Ammo Sales Records Useless

The study shows that because of the tremendous manpower involved in monitoring the records and doing background checks, the Los Angeles Police Department is largely not doing so.

Significanly, the Rand study does not conclude, nor claim to prove, that violent felons or other dangerous criminals typically purchase ammunition from firearms retailers.

What the Rand study actually did uncover is the state of confusion that exists concerning when a person is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

Similarly, the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 repealed the federal requirement to show I.D. when purchasing ammunition because it was found to be ineffective at reducing crime.

So basically what we have is yet another push by anti-gun orginizations to try and prevent law-abiding citizens from exercising their rights specifically protected by the Second Amendment.

If you live in California it behoves you to make your voice heard and contact members of the Long Beach City Council and let them know that you oppose any Ammunition Sales Registration.

Contact emails for the Long Beach Mayor and City Council can be found at this link.

Your letters do not need to be long.  A simple letter stating something like the one below is sufficient.  Copy and Paste if you like, but please change the name of the addressee and add your name to the end. ;)

Mayor Bob Foster,

I am a resident of California and I urge you and the City Counsel to oppose the Ammunition Sales Registration ordinance.  Similar ordinances have been shown to be ineffective at lowering crime and have been subsequently repealed. Again, I urge you to oppose this ordinance.

Sincerely,

Your Name

The Million Gun March

This will be fun to watch.  G_____ can be our representative in the satellite march.  I liked this Q&A in the FAQ:

Will people be carrying guns?

Because it is the right of all people to keep and bear arms, we fully
support the peaceful carrying of firearms where allowed by law. However,
because Washington DC’s overly oppressive laws prohibit carrying firearms in
public, We cannot promote or condone carrying firearms on the main march in
Washington DC. However, if not prohibited by law at any of our Satellite
marches, we fully support the peaceful carrying of arms.

Obama Biden – Permanent Assault Weapon Ban, Close “gunshow” loophole

To quote from the whitehouse.gov page on urban police:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

With a democratic legislative body, these seem like that will rapidly become done deals.  Great.

So, going through them:

From wikipedia, The Tiahart amendment..
… prohibits the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) from releasing information from its firearms trace database to anyone other than a law enforcement agency or prosecutor in connection with a criminal investigation. Additionally, any data so released is inadmissible in a civil lawsuit. Some groups, including the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, believe that having further access to the BATFE database would help municipal police departments track down sellers of illegal guns and curb crime. These groups are trying to undo the Tiahrt Amendment.

Gun checks were made to stop criminals from getting guns. NOT to make public rosters of gun owners.  The Tiahrt amendment does NOTHING to stop a DA from doing a gun trace during a criminal investigation.  But it does protect private citizens from other such queries or from national databases of gun owners being created.

The gun show loophole is a myth.  Purchases at gun shows require background checks and have for some time.

The assault weapon ban… Well, which one do they want permanent?  The AR and >10 rd magazine law from 1994 or the one they tried to pass in 2006 that would ban ANY centerfire rifle based on a military design (I think that’s all of them).

This is a pretty harsh stance on 2nd amendment rights.  Please let your representatives know how you feel.  It won’t do any good, but, you might as well speak with experience when you say democracy doesn’t always work.

Safety, Airplanes, Armed Pilots, Negligent Dischages and You.

Last week, an armed pilot on a commercial passenger aircraft accidentally discharged his firearm resulting in damage that grounded the plane for several days (Washington Times  story).  Thankfully nobody was hurt, unless you consider the pilot’s career.

The blame?  Most peoples’ opinion is that the TSA policy for armed pilots is dangerously flawed.  Specfically:

  • Armed pilots must use a TSA approved holster (um… ok)
  • Armed pilots must secure the gun whenever the cockpit door is opened (ok)
  • The method of securing the gun involves placing a padlock through the holster and through trigger guard of the loaded firearm on a holster never designed for this operation (WHAT?).

A basic rule of firearm safety — don’t shove things in the trigger guard unless you are intending to discharge the gun!  There is a youtube video that has been posted that shows just how dangerous this procedure is.

The question to you:  This is not an isolated example of mandated unsafe practices.  What do you do when you are being required to engage in what you consider an unsafe practice.

In ADE I have encountered this routinely when training military and law enforcement personal…  SWAT teams that insist on stacking tightly together with rifle muzzles one bump from being pointed at a guy’s head.  We see sheriff deputies that insist on flaying their support hand fingers away from their body during a pistol presentation because that is how they were trained.  Inevitably, these actions end up with somebody hurt or dead.   In training, we stop them — zero tolerance.

But… What do you do…. When your supervisor insists that you put that padlock through the trigger guard of your loaded pistol against your firm knowledge of proper firearm safety?

When all is said and done, if your firearm ends up killing or injuring somebody it is you that will have to live with the consequences and the emotions.
