Ace Electronics Enterprise, or AEE (no, this is not a subsidiary of ADE), maker of miniature digital video equipment, has designs for a cool little digital video camera that you can attach to firearms. The High Resolution DV Used for Guns PD91. Catchy name, huh? I bet the Chinese name sounds better.

This little digital video camera is designed to attach to your favorite Picatinny rail equipped firearm and records a gun barrel perspective of your exploits, or incompetence. It records video with a resolution of 640 x 480 @30 fps. Based on AEE’s other products the camera should produce a nice clear image. I would be concerned about the ruggedness of the device. Nobody wants to buy an expensive device only to have it jarred to pieces by the shock of firearm recoil. Hopefully the designers take in to account the beating Picatinny rail attached equipment need to take. Rugged tactical lights fail when attached to pistols, so you can only imagine what would happen to a fragile little CCD sensor.

Overall it looks like a cool little attachment for someone who participates in a lot of tactical shooting classes or competitions and in that respect it could also prove to be a great training aid if it is designed to take punishment.

There is currently no pricing or availability information, and the image even looks like a computer generated CAD design, so we’ll have to wait and see if it ever appears on a gun store shelf.

Product specs from AEE website

Apparently (per GunTrustLawyer), “ATF has now determined that this is regulated by the NFA and must be replaced.” Pretty odd ending for a gun that had to cease production anyway….

Update - I found the following info that helps explain the recall from m4carbine.net:

“As you are aware, the GCA, 18 USC $ 921 (a) (24), defines ‘firearm silencer’ as follows:

“….any device for silencing, muffling or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.”

General characteristics of known firearm silencers include:
1 Ported inner tube (bleed holes)
2 Expansion chambers
3 Baffles or washers which create seperate expansion chambers
4 sound dampening material such as foam, steel wool and other materials
5 End Caps
6 Encapsulators

The previously submitted GSG-5SD barrel shroud incorporates a large expansion chamber and integral end caps and, therefore, was classified as a firearm silencer.”

Thanks to TheFirearmBlog for this story.

Since it seems like a few people have been looking at the PM9, this story would be of interest.

Short summary: during range visit, a PM9 “blew up” in the shooter’s hands while using factory ammo… Notice the failed extractor and side panel.

As you read the rest of the story it turns out the shooter may have been using reloads, the seemingly main cause for all the Glock KaBOOMS! that have led to Glocks being called grenades.

To be honest though, it looks like the damage is a little different.

Here is a photo of an exploded glock-nade:

This explodes near where the round is chambered due to an unsupported casing. This problem seemed to be most reported with the .40’s.

So the PM9 looks to be a different mechanism to me. Probably too much energy in the recoil that made the slide come back with excessive force — yay for double charged reloads :-p. Kahr was apparently excellent with the service.
