The short summary:

Property crime continues to fall
ALL violent crime is up (except homicide)

Last year rates fell across the board. It is interesting that property crime continues to fall, you would expect that the “bad economy” might make people steal more. But, there certainly seems to be a whole lot more hate in Los Angeles right now..

Summary: Dancer in the SF Valley was called outside by two acquaintances. After she was outside, they doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire. Suspects are identified and still at large….

The founders of our nation were afraid of abuses of power. Look at our history. Look at the Bill of Rights. I’m sure that everybody that reads these little posts has a strong view on the value of the 1st and 2nd amendment. But, if there was one additional thing that I could drill into every citizen of this country… teach to every social studies student in high school… and, hopefully, start getting everybody I know to start telling all their friends, it’s this:

Watching the watchmen — differential right to privacy

Summary: DNA sampling of everyone charged with a felony. Sometimes its a misdemeanor, sometimes its arrested but not charged. And the DNA is absolutely kept forever, even if the person is innocent.

DNA databases are an invasion of privacy (especially for somebody that is not a convicted criminal), have a world of possibility for abuse/misuse, and, based on previous conversations, it could lead to false arrest and wrongful convictions.

But, I suppose if I have nothing to hide, why should I care? Right? And then THIS made the news…

Summary: LAPD officers occasionally have to give DNA evidence during an investigation so that their samples can be separated out from the scene of a crime. LAPD officers are upset because there are no safeguards, there is a potential for abuse of the data, etc.

So, it’s an invasion of privacy for the Watchmen, but, for the little people — well, they have nothing to hide, right? No potential of abuse, right?

Domestic Violence ends in Shooting (but not what you think)

Normally when you see that title, you think, domestic abuse escalated to the point where the abuser shot the victim. This story has a bit of a twist..

As reported in the lapd blog. Man confronts his ex girlfriend in a garage and starts stabbing her with a pocketknife. The womans daughter comes out to help her mom and starts getting stabbed as well. The daughter’s boyfriend comes out and shoots the man dead. Woman and daughter, although hospitalized, will survive.

Is your first concern really whether the boyfriend’s gun was legal or not or if citizens should carry guns at all?

Second thought for your consideration…. If the boyfriend called the cops, how long would it have taken for them to arrive? Would the woman and her daughter have been dead by then, or, would the attacker have shown mercy and stopped before he stabbed them to death?

These are the stories you don’t here. Hats off to LAPD for actually bringing this to the public attention. Then again, LAPD did arrest the boyfriend for murder.

Man attempts to stop carjacking — Killed in attempt

18 year old Javier Villareal tried to stop a carjacking in Pacoima on the 11th at 1:05am with a gun.

Unfortunately, at least one of the 3 carjackers was also armed and killed Villareal. Somewhat sad to see bad things happen to people that try to do the right thing.

Are you obeying firearms laws? Are you sure?

This guy thought so too: Man arrested at LAX for illegal pitstop…

The rule of thumb for firearm transport is that you can transport properly stored firearms between two locations if you are legally allowed to possess the firearms in those two locations. The law tends to include gas stations, restaurants, etc. as reasonable stops.

Surprise! Apparently there is a weird law in CA that makes it illegal to stop if you are carrying your legal, registered, assault rifle.
